Ready for your plan? I can help
Curious about coaching with me this Fall? Let’s chat!
You know that saying, Leap and the net will appear?
I’m more of a “write a pros and cons list before doing anything,” kind of gal.
You, too?
In fact, with just about everything, I like to be prepared. And my coaching clients tend to feel the same way.
After all – when you’re facing a career or life crossroads – who doesn’t want to have a plan…
…to leave your toxic job?
…to transition to a more fulfilling career?
…to carve out time for yourself and the creative projects that refuel you?
…to put your goals and dreams into action?
Often we approach planning as a linear, step-by-step process. A sequence of events that happen, in order, to get us to our goal:
Step 1 → Step 2 → Step 3 → Step 4 → “I’ve arrived!”
Oh, if only it was that easy! 😩
The reality is that this way of planning doesn’t work in real life.
For one, it relies on you knowing all the steps in advance – and life just doesn’t work that way. We hit roadblocks and obstacles, as well as stumble into unexpected wins and opportunities. We make mistakes – and learn from them.
And speaking of learning… What if you get to Step 3 and realize your destination point has changed? You might realize you’re going down the wrong path, or your goals have shifted – what then?
The best kind of career and life plans are more creative and more flexible than that.
What I’ve learned is that, like your favorite all-you-can-eat buffet, planning should include a healthy sampling of four main ingredients:
Discovering who you are today and who you are becoming
Defining the true problem you’re trying to solve and what you want next
Imagining new possibilities for yourself and your future
Iterating your way forward through consistent and sustainable steps, every day.
Take it from me, and my clients: this kind of career and life planning works.
Instead of following someone else’s prescribed path, you’re building your own plan around who you are and what’s authentic to you.
You’re also building in extra cushion and elasticity – so that if you need to course correct, you can do it so much faster.
Try This Out
Today, I invite you to consider the last time you set a life or career goal, and made a plan to achieve it. How did it go? Specifically, reflect on:
Did you try to plan out all the steps before you got started? Was the real experience like what you’d expected, and if not – what was different?
If you could go back and plan for this goal again, what would you do differently? Why?
What advice would you give your younger self about planning for career and life change? What have you tried, where have you made mistakes, and what have you learned?
