Why ‘I don’t know’ feels so hard

TL:DR – My live, free workshop helps you get out of uncertainty by getting clear on the true problem you're trying to solve. Please share it with a friend who’s feeling stuck at work.

What if it was ok NOT to know?

I attended a panel a few weeks ago and one of the speakers asked the audience this short but powerful question.

What if I could just say, I don’t know?

Like my ten year-old’s rock tumbler, this question has been bouncing around in my brain ever since.

Let's face it – we humans hate uncertainty, and ‘straight-A student’ perfectionists like us hate it even more.

And yet – there’s this really uncomfortable, really uncertain moment that happens for many of us…

When we know things need to change AND we're not sure what to do.

Maybe you’re unhappy at your job, but you don’t know how to resolve that.

Should I quit and get a new job?

Should I talk to my boss?

Should I transfer or get a promotion?

Should I just stick it out for another year?

Should I go to grad school?

Should I start a business?

The list goes on!

What if you could just not know right now?

Instead of going straight into solution mode.

Instead of rushing through the discomfort.

Instead of pretending that you’re ready to make a choice.

What if you could make peace with the fact that you simply don't have the answer just yet?

Here are three reasons to embrace the gift of uncertainty:

It's honest. When we’re making changes in our careers or lives, there simply IS an “in-between” space where we know we need to change, but we haven’t changed yet.

Instead of feeling lost, treat the uncertainty you feel like being on a location on a map – a map that you’re following along your journey. You may feel unstable, but at least you know you're on the map.

It’s current. Embracing the uncertainty of this moment helps you stay present and engaged in your life today. Don’t spend your time pining for the future at the expense of the life you’re living right now.

It’s clarifying. One of the reasons you keep finding yourself in patterns is because you assume you know the problem you’re solving. If you hate your job, and you believe that the problem is your job, it’s no wonder you decide to go out and get a new job.

But might there be a different, perhaps even more urgent or meaningful problem to solve for?

Before you rush into solution mode, transform your uncertainty into curiosity for the problem you’d like to solve most.

Which is exactly what my free, live workshop is going to help you do:

"From Confusion to Clarity: A Career Problem Solving Workshop"

I know I’ve been sharing this with you a lot recently – AND it’s because I feel so strongly that this is a step so many of us miss.

It’s ok not to know all the answers right now.

And your first step to that clarity is to make sure you’re solving the right problem.

If you know someone who needs to hear this, please forward this email to them!
