Decide what’s important – and live from that place

“Not only do you get to decide what’s important, but now you get to live from that place.”

I’m a big believer in signs.

A believer in the idea that the Universe is always speaking to us, guiding us. And that our opportunity is to pay attention and listen.

Lately I’ve been reflecting on how my life is changing. Like two tectonic plates rubbing together, I can feel the foundation of my life shifting.

New priorities. New responsibilities. Even new schedules and routines.

Normally I might dig my heels in and lament these changes. I mean, I generally like my life the way it is!

But lately I’ve been reconsidering this. I’ve started seeing these shifts as opportunities to start fresh and design my life the way I want to live it.

So I’m sitting in my comfy chair in my office, contemplating these changes, and I look over at my bookshelf. Rha Goddess’ book, The Calling – with its bright cover design – catches my eye. I pick it up and start thumbing through the pages when my finger lands on this sentence:

“Not only do you get to decide what’s important, but now you get to live from that place.”

[OK, Universe! I hear you! 😂]

But here’s the rub: HOW?

It’s one thing to know you want change. It’s a totally different thing to actually live it.

Of course, I get the irony here – given that this is exactly the path I guide my coaching clients to navigate! Not just figuring out what they want, but actually making it a reality.

And also? It doesn’t mean it’s easy! So today we’re going back to basics so we – yes, you AND me – can decide what’s important, and live from that place.

Try This Out

The process to create meaningful change at work or in life involves four steps:

  1. Discover who you are and what’s going on in your world today

  2. Define what matters to you at this point in your life

  3. Imagine a new and more resonant future

  4. Iterate your way there through consistent, incremental action

These are the four steps I guide my clients through, and they’re the four steps I outline in “100 Days of Designing My Life: The Reflection Journal.”

To try these out, take a moment and consider a place in your life where you feel misaligned or in conflict.

It could be something “tiny” like always waking up feeling tired and wishing you felt more rested, or it could be something “big” like hating your job.

Grab a piece of paper or your journal, and consider your answers to the following questions:

  1. DISCOVER: What’s the tension or conflict I feel here? What is the impact this has on me?

  2. DEFINE: What’s important to me about resolving this conflict?

  3. IMAGINE: What do I want to change about this situation? What does my ideal future look like?

  4. ITERATE: What’s the smallest step I could take today to bring me 1% closer to this future?

Take 10 minutes to explore these questions, and see what clarity emerges for you!

What To Do Next

Spring is a time when many of us feel antsy for change. Just like animals, our winter hibernation is over and we’re ready to stretch and grow.

But just like Rha’s quote, it’s one thing to know you want change. It’s another thing altogether to actually live it.

I’ve got two spots open this Spring for coaching clients to begin – either in my 4-week Career Strategy Intensive, or my 6-month Career Redesign Experience. As a recent client explained:

“Ashley didn’t help me get a job; she guided me to a place where I could see a new world of possibility. I have had one of the best years of my life personally and professionally because of the confidence our coaching gave me to say yes to what lights me up and what aligns with my authentic purpose. With Ashley’s help, I’ve finally given myself permission to explore (and do!) what I want to do and what I’m good at, instead of what I “should” be doing or “should” be good at.”

If you’re ready to stop thinking about change – and to start actually living it – reach out. I’d love to support you!

Onward,
