Pause and Rest

Ooof, what a week! Between a quick-fire, cross-country work trip, some big parenting moments, and very little sleep… I feel like I’ve run a marathon at a sprinter’s pace.

In my hotel room this past weekend, before the craziness and running around started, I laid out a towel on the floor and did some yoga. Moving my body, clearing my head, taking full breaths – I felt grounded and whole.

I took a seat on the towel and quieted my mind. I opened up my prototype copy of The Little Deck of Sweet Reflections (which I now carry with me everywhere). And as I shuffled, two cards popped out:

“Ha,” I laughed! “Yeah, right.” <<insert busy mom eyeroll here>>

At the time, I interpreted the message as affirmation of the yoga and breathing session I just completed. Like, yes Universe, I’m glad that you approve!

But as the week has gone on, and the frenetic energy seems to have only intensified, I now see these cards as my reminder to seek out moments of pause and rest regularly:

When I’m navigating a conflict with my son.

When I’m writing a stern email to a customer service rep.

When I’m cancelling meetings because I’m too overwhelmed to handle one more thing on my calendar.

And also:

When I’m listening to the birds chirp as I walk to my mailbox.

When I’m typing away quietly at my desk and my dog snores in the background.

When I’m snuggling with my child and stroking his hand.

Pause and rest have been my reminders this week. And I hope they can be yours, too.

Try This Out

Today, let’s consider the words “pause” and “rest.”

Take out your journal, or open your voice memo app on your phone, and reflect:

  • What does the word Pause mean to you? How do you define the word Rest?

  • Historically, what has been your relationship with these words? What would you like it to be?

  • What is the opposite of Pause? Of Rest? What’s notable about that?

  • How might you bring Pause or Rest just 1% more into your day today? For what benefit?

What To Do Next

These are examples of the kinds of questions you’re prompted to explore in my new intuitive card deck, The Little Deck of Sweet Reflections.
